42CrMo4 steel is a structural, alloyed steel for quenching and tempering. It is susceptible to machining, as well as various heat treatments. It is characterized by high strength and ductility. Thanks to its good mechanical properties, it is a basic material for the manufacture of machine parts subjected to varying bending and torsional loads and wear.
The presence of alloying elements contributes to good hardenability. This grade is difficult to weld, but after appropriate treatment such as softening annealing, welding is possible, but it should be done in an atmosphere of argon or carbon dioxide.
42CrMo4 steel can be cut by arc - plasma jet or gas - oxygen, after heating with an acetylene-oxygen or propane-butane-oxygen flame. Before cutting, the material should be preheated to 300-400 °C, while after the cutting procedure - cooled in air.
In addition, steel can be electrically, resistance and friction welded. Resistance welding requires high clamping force and smaller currents and extended time. The steel can be welded in the tempered or annealed softened state.
