Steel grade 11SMn30+C

Steel with the designation 11SMn30 is one of the more popular automatic steels, used mainly for the production of machined parts. It is designed for machining on high-speed machine tools and automatic lathes. It is most often supplied in the form of peeled or drawn bars of various cross-sections, or in the form of precision tubes. The designation 11SMn30 refers to its chemical composition; it mainly contains elements such as sulfur and manganese.

11SMn30 steel belongs to the group of unalloyed quality steels and is not intended for heat treatment. It also contains an increased content of sulfur and phosphorus. The appropriate chemical composition ensures the separation of a large number of non-metallic inclusions (sulfides and phosphides), providing very good machinability and adequate chip breakage, which is particularly important when working on automatic or high-speed thread cutting machines. According to EN ISO 683-4, this steel does not contain harmful alloying elements such as Pb, Te and others.

The correct amount of sulfur and manganese contributes to good machinability, which is necessary when used in automatic lathes that operate with minimal human supervision, hence the requirement to form short chips that break easily. In addition, manganese binds sulfur into stable MnS-type compounds, which improves the strength and hardness of the steel.

The manufacture of products is carried out with the utmost care and monitored at each stage of production. The precision of manufacturing is aimed at obtaining a uniform morphology of manganese sulfides (MnS) and other non-metallic inclusions contained in the metallic matrix throughout the product, which affect the expected fragmentation of the chip during the turning process, without the use of coolant. The mechanical properties of 11SMn30 steel are optimized for machining.

Another advantage of this steel is its low tendency to form cutting growths, which leads to smooth machined surfaces and longer tool life. The surface of the material after turning is free of cavities, bumps and depressions. During machining, this steel exhibits minimal deformation, which ensures high dimensional accuracy of end products and is a very good material for mass production of precision parts.

11SMn30 vs 11SMn37 comparison

When comparing 11SMn30 steel with 11SMn37 steel, the main difference is the sulfur content, which affects their mechanical and technological properties. 11SMn37 steel contains more sulfur, which gives it higher tensile strength and hardness, but slightly worse machinability compared to 11SMn30 steel.
